Tribute to Lizzie Siddal and Amy Manson
I was thrilled when Marilyn Mallia shared this beautiful portrait that she painted as a tribute to Lizzie Siddal and the actress who recently portrayed her, Amy Manson. Marilyn shared it via the LizzieSiddal.com Facebook Fan page, which is one of the reasons I enjoy sharing this website through other social media outlets. It provides a good chance to connect with those who have similar interests and enjoy Pre-Raphaelite art.

This is lovely to see. I won’t soon forget Amy Manson’s portrayal, or how it surprised me with so much of my own perception of Lizzie’s character. Thank you Marilyn and Stephanie for sharing this.
Hmm…so, a Manson/Siddal hybrid? It has far too much 21st century erect, pouting self-confidence and awareness of a viewing public about it to represent Lizzie Siddal. Amy Manson’s theatrical image, stunning though it was at first viewing, offered a hairstyle (as in this portrait) that would never have been worn by Siddal, and of course her Scottish roots (facial features) shone through.
The reality seems to be that despite the comments from writers at the time, neither of Rossetti’s greatest loves – Lizzie Siddal and Janey Morris – conformed to today’s perception of feminine beauty. Rossetti seems to have idealised them in drawings and paintings to satisfy his own fantasies. This, of course, makes the question of what were these women really like and what would their allure be if they were alive today, all the more challenging.
